Renault introduced turbo power to Formula 1 at the 1977 British Grand Prix with the RS01.
It’s propensity for coming to a smoky stop earned it the nickname ‘yellow teapot’. It took until the United States Grand Prix at Watkins Glen in 1978 for the car to score its first points, Jean-Pierre Jabouille finishing fourth.
But Renault persisted with the technology and once they started winning races with it their rivals followed their lead and began using turbo power themselves.
