The long-awaited 2010 F1 season game by Codemasters will go on sale in September this year.
“F1 2010″ is being produced for Playstation 3, Xbox 360 and PC. Players will get to drive the new Korean Grand Prix circuit in the game before the cars have raced there for real.
See below for the first screenshots of the game.
The only officially-licensed F1 game will feature all the tracks and cars from this year’s F1 season. The new rules including the refuelling ban will also be simulated.
However none of last season’s cars will feature due to licensing restrictions.
Here’s how Codemasters describe the title:
In “F1 2010″ gamers will take on the full, expanded grid in a variety of game modes including Grand Prix, Championship, Time Trial and an extensive, innovative Career mode. “F1 2010″ will also feature a highly advanced damage model, fully dynamic weather system and extensive competitive multiplayer options.
In production at Codemasters Studios Birmingham, “F1 2010″ is being developed using the EGO Game Technology Platform, Codemasters’ proprietary tech that powered the critically acclaimed, million-plus selling “Colin McRae: Dirt 2″ and “Race Driver: Grid”. The award-winning technology has been further developed to accurately recreate the unique aerodynamics and handling of 200mph-plus Formula One cars. The tech combined with Codemasters’ unprecedented access to Formula One teams and drivers will ensure that “F1 2010″ delivers the most authentic Formula One racing experience yet.
There will be a launch event for the game next week at which I hope to find out more about the title, such as how they plan to create a realistic version of a circuit that hasn’t been raced on yet.
When the game was first announced last year we drew up an exhaustive wish list with over 300 comments suggesting ideas fans would like to see in it. Which of these should make it into the final game?
Let me know what else you’d like to find out about the game at the launch in the comments.

They are having a virtual paddock mode! Sounds incredible.
Good realism too, If you fail or skip qualifying session the team will start to favour your team mate and it could compromise your race!

hi. does anyone know when the DEMO is coming out?

My wishlist is quite short:
1) If the career mode doesn’t make me want to leave work early to carry on playing, it has failed; and
2) Have a realistic difference in the performace of the different cars to make winning a race in an HRT feel like a challenge.
But I’ll probably buy it even if it is useless…
JHunt123

Wow nice graphics can’t wait. I think if its realistic then FINISHING a race in HRT should be a challenge ..

10th March 2010, 23:20
I just hope that when you drive, the cars feel like they are banging on the road and kerbs and not sliding like figure skating. That was one characteristic Colin Mcray rally had that was very unrealistic.
There attempt to simulate overstear and understear looked more like sliding on soap.

The only thing I want in this game is simple: SAFETY CAR. That’s it simple as that, oh and realistic career mode, ie:
a. Lewis Hamilton started his career in a top team, so why can’t I start in a top team?
b. Drivers can move to teams, ex: Mark Webber can move to Lotus, or Bruno Senna can move to a mclaren.
c. I can retire whenever I want to, it sucks to only compete in 5 short seasons.
d. Features GP2 or other “lower class” formula drivers, or ex formula 1 drivers, like Adam Carroll or Kimi Raikkonen for instance.
e. “Lower class” formula drivers can be promoted to F1, you don’t expect drivers Mark Webber, Michael Schumacher to compete every season, give the young drivers a chance to shine.
And finally: Scenario Mode/Challenge Mode, ex; Be Kimi Raikkonen at Suzuka 2005, drive Jaques Villeneuve’s car in Jerez 1997 to safety, Be Ayrton Senna, and held Nigel Mansell in Monaco 1992, etc.

From what I’ve seen of the Wii version there are challenges, but they are no where near as interesting as the ones you suggested! They involve things like trying to pass 10 number of cars in 2 laps, or getting home in 8th place at Spa with 2 laps to go on slicks when it has just started raining…
2 Minutes To Midnight
11th March 2010, 15:06
Yeah, I know. I played the F1 2009 psp version, & played challenge mode, and I think it sucks. There’s no drama, or F1 “classic moment”, and it’s not challenging at all.

Coming out in September, that’s around the same time as GT5. I hope it doesn’t get overlooked too much.

10th March 2010, 14:18
Yeaah… i reckon GT5 will end up seeing the light of day in 2011 maybe.
Those screenshots look awfully good, but the questions is how much post production they’ve had slepped on them and if they’re representative of in-game polygon counts, lighting, and detail levels.
The most important thing is how the game plays though. Hopefully they won’t be using the physics engine used in GRID, as that game was far too arcadey and easy to play. beautiful, but arcadey.
Brad Leigh
10th March 2010, 14:47
Those sure don’t look like in-game screenshots. I’m so excited for this game, yet so skeptical after F1 2009.

10th March 2010, 15:34
I wouldn’t see the point of them putting up fake or enhanced screenshots anyway, especially if they’re going to look different when the game comes out.

Near enough every games company does it when creating hype for their game. They even employ people specifically for tarting up screenshots. So you can never be too sure.

Pennyarcade.com conveniently coined the term “Bullshot” for that exact type of overly optimistic image. These images are so obviously tarted up for us. Show me some real screen shots from in-car, or post a short video demo (even if it’s beta) and then, maybe, I’ll be impressed. Their PSP game was really awful so I’m not holding my breath for the PC game.
Invoke
10th March 2010, 15:48
They definitely look like the Ego engine to me, you can turn off the horribly intense bloom effect though so don’t worry.
It’s the same game engine. They usually improve it for each new game & may improve the physics (I hope), but expect it to still be catered more towards a gamepad than a wheel.
Jev
11th March 2010, 13:56
if it is catered for a gamepad rather than a wheel, then it sucks big time. f1 cars uses steering wheel for control, so why cant the game?

F1 Outsider
10th March 2010, 20:25
Gran Turismo Prologue was actually just a glorified playable demo. They had to come out with it because it was taking them so long to finalize the game. It even retailed for half the price of a regular PS3 game.
It didn’t have the Nurburgring though, so replayability for me is limited.

10th March 2010, 14:18
Ahhhh 6 months to wait, I was hoping it’d be out earlier, especially since it’s already been delayed from 2009. Then again, I suppose the release date is just a sales technique to capitalise on the high interest in F1 at the end of the season. But, like Martin says above, going up against Gran Turismo isn’t going to do it any good.
I wonder what they mean by ‘innovative career mode’? It would be great if the calender changed between seasons, and drivers moved between teams every so often, otherwise it’ll just feel like repeating the 2010 season again and again rather than actually progressing.
But top of my wish list is Safety Car’s. They would be great!

I really don’t see this as going up against GT5.That particular game was originally due out as a release game for the PS3 and has been continuously delayed ever since.
It made me laugh in December as a work collegue almost pre-ordered it as the release date was March 2010. I tried to place a £20 bet with him that it would not be released in March and he declinded to offer. Guess what, it is now delayed until November.
Anyone want to bet that it won’t be out in November? :-)
ajokay
10th March 2010, 14:27
As I said further up, I bet 2011 is when we’ll see it. Even though every screenshot from the past year says shows what looks like a finished game.

I’ve been following the development of another f1-game called Grand Prix Racing Manager for a few years now.. They’re currently doing beta, but it has been work in progress for 10 years. It should be out around summer 2010 I think.. Graphics are nothing to speak of, but the manager part looks really interesting in my opinion – they are enthusiasts, so they’ve taken care of a lot of details. Check it out if you please http://www.gprm.co.uk
Also join their facebook group, rumour has it when they reach 600 members we’ll see video footage of gameplay :D

Ok, so we have to wait a bit but I don’t mind, I’ve been waiting years for GT5.
I don’t think I’ll get it for a while – I certainly wont pay full whack when it comes out – because I’ve been underawed by every F1 game since the excellent F1 ’97 on PSX and I don’t want to spend £40 on something I’ll enjoy for a week then give up on to play something else.
ajokay
10th March 2010, 14:45
F1 ’97 was the last console-based F1 game I played too. Magical that game was. Nothing has lived up to it since. I downloaded the F1 Championship Edition demo for the PS3 and was underwhelmed. Plus it has James Allen commentating…

That Ego engine is really starting to look washed out and dull these days. I hope the graphics are much sharper on the final product with less glow/flare effects in the lighting.
I enjoy a lot of Codemasters racing titles, and I’m sure this will be no different. Hopefully the final version has a scalable difficulty… so new comers can enjoy it just as much as us die hard folk.

Questions…
1. Is it going to be a realistic sim with pitstops, any team to driver radio, realistic changes to handling as the tires wear and will we be able to adjust the front wing?
2. What does the career mode entail? Will we start our career in Virgin and attempt to land a drive at Ferrari?
3. Will the race weekend include all three practice sessions, qual, and then the race?
4. Will there also be the arcade mode where someone can just turn the game on and have fun without worrying with the setup and handling so much?
P.S. I don’t care if this game comes out the same day at GT5, I will buy both. How could you possibly not buy this game if you’re an F1 fan?
Mark Hitchcock
10th March 2010, 16:49
1. Judging by past F1 games I’d guess that they will definitely have pitstops and definitely have realistic tyre wear. But as the adjustable front wing has kinda been ignored by most people last year I doubt they’ll have that.
2. The last F1 game I bought (F1 06) had you starting in one of the slowest teams and working your way up so I imagine this will be similar.
3. Again, in F1 06 you had the option to do all the practice sessions, quali and the race. But you didn’t have to.
4. Almost certainly. They’d be mad to make the whole game an arcadey game like Grid, but they’d be even more mad if they completely ignored the casual gamers who just want to stick the disc in and have a race without having to learn how to drive an F1 car properly.

I want to know what the damage “engine” will be like. Granted I haven’t played an F1 game for years and years, but I was always very disappointed that the damage to the cars seemed to be all-or-nothing.
I guess it’s probably too advanced even for today’s consoles, but I’d love if you could damage you front wing endplate against another car and the handling of your car change ever so slightly as a result…
But as I say, probably too advanced to program still…
Joey-Poey
10th March 2010, 17:33
Not at all. Indycar Racing 1 and 2 included that as far back as 1992 and 1994. They should just resurrect Papyrus and get them to make the games IMHO.
Joey-Poey
10th March 2010, 15:38
VERY eager for this. I mostly want it to feel more like a simulation when driving rather than something with arcade physics and handling. Racing in Forza 2 and 3 is ridiculously fun because of the realism and challenge, but without open wheels like Indy cars or F1 it’s felt lacking for some time. But then maybe I’ve just gotten spoiled by simulators over the past few years.
But, I have heard some people suggest the ability to switch between an arcade mode and a simulation mode, which I think would be a nice compromise so that the hardcore drivers aren’t disappointed and the casual gamers aren’t scared away.

Odds are they will blow this one. Older Dirt games had better physics. These guys are all about looks and not about anything other than 5 year old arcade game play.
Besides this, September? They were supposed to have this out by Christmas last year and then it gets pushed back to… Oh, yeah! After the season’s over. Great. That will be as much fun. Its as though they don’t want to sell this title. Idiots.
GT5, even if released at the same time, will not be competing with this title much. F1 fans are different than “car racing” fans. GT5 is mostly for middle school through high school kids in the US.

Really worried about this game to say the least. The PSP version was utter rubbish and the biggest waste of my hard earned coin. Keith,
(1) what type of physics engines are they using to simulate the car handling characteristics?
(2) How real are the environments? Most of them in the PSP version are lacking so much its not funny.
(3)How the hell are Codemasters really going to make an authentic Formula 1 game?!
Mike
11th March 2010, 6:09
Never had a PS3, and I don’t have the funds to go and get a new game, but my impression of console racers is that, they are going backwards, pole position 96, on my N64, allows you to edit who drives for what team, and you could even change which car had which engine, not realistic there I know but it did increase the replayability…
The newer games, my newest being 06 on the ps2, are, only better to a certain extent. but ignoring the modern sounds, physics and graphics they don’t seem to be actually better games, In fact, I think some are getting worse…
I’ve played GRID, shiny, very shiny, and not too bad, , but for anyone who desires an ounce of simulation, then, I think we might have to look elsewhere…
Can someone tell me about 09 on the Wii?

Sneak preview

11th March 2010, 9:56
It seems promising to me that many of the new and interesting features of the 2010 season will be documented by an official game release. Releasing it in the fall, hopefully, will give the team enough time and possibility to create accurate representations of the new circuit bits, the effects the 2010 regulations have on the cars’ behaviour and, thus, the racing – and the teams’ performances we’ll actually be seeing on the track after the coming weekend.
I’m hoping they will be going down a dual route, with a believably realistic physics simulation regarding the cars’ behaviour on the track to challenge the serious simulation fans and enough driving aids, interactive exercises and the like to support casual fans who’d rather just want to enjoy the feeling of driving a Grand Prix race without having to worry about too much of the details. Then again, the actual series itself seems to be keen on promoting its spectacle and thrill, so maybe, that gives an indication of the emphasis a virtual representation could actually be supposed to make.
Generally, I think a motor racing career simulation would be a very interesting subject for a game, but realistically, it would necessitate acquiring a number of licenses for runner-up categories’ past seasons, if the player truly were to have the option to progress up to Grand Prix racing in 2010 through Formulae Something. At the same time, it would be limiting to give the player the option to advance up to the top category and then have just the one current season available there. From this perspective, it would probably be less expensive and more interesting for a game developer to explore the idea of a complete career in racing with at least semi-fictional virtual categories, instead of having to come up with detailed representations of the actual ones.

Do you know if there will be a MAC version?

No, sadly I think there’s only a windows version, sorry no MAC. But, you can always use boot camp if you wanna play on mac (like I do if i want to play GP4, F1 challenge, or any other windows game on mac)

i’d like to know why it will take until september to release the game, when the season is nearly over and why last years cars will be used. this game has been in development for over two years a will be a long way behind when it is finally released. how hard is it to get an up-to-date game for the current season, with a release date of around march/april/may?

I think it’s strange they’re putting out the game that early, when they won’t have any data from Korea.

I really hope they drastically change the game engine they used for Grid. It really didn’t feel like you were driving a car in that game. I hope the game engine is much more like RacePro or even Forza if we can’t get that.

Wow the screenshots look good and with still using F106 with Micheal at the wheel of the Ferrari, it will be great to get into the brawn car.
